Rachel Schreiber,
MFA, PhD

Who I am & contact

I am a cultural historian, artist, and designer.

My historical research focuses on: gender and labor activism; graphic satire of the modernist radical press in the United States; visual and print culture; and feminist biography. In my visual practice, I explore similar themes, mostly in photo-based works that employ portraiture. Biography and portraiture are strategies I use to illuminate the lives of individuals who make important contributions, but who are not themselves famous or perform labor that is invisible.

As an academic, I have been a faculty member and administrator in higher education in art and design for over 26 years. I am currently University Professor of Art, Media, and Cultural History at The New School. I served as Executive Dean at Parsons School of Design at The New School (New York City), from July 2019 through July 2022.

I hold an MA and PhD in US Gender History from Johns Hopkins University; an MFA in Photography and Writing from the California Institute of the Arts (Valencia); and a BFA in Graphic Design from the Rhode Island School of Design.
